Would Microsoft pay me to take their console?

No, not really free Wiis, but check this: by some estimates, Microsoft loses $125 each time it sells a 360. Microsoft is also taking a nearly $100 charge per 360 sold so far for warranty costs.

Estimates for the Wii suggest that Nintendo makes $90 each time it sells a Wii for $250.

If the Wii costs about $160 to make and Microsoft is willing to lose $225 per console, would Microsoft be willing to pay me $65 to take a Wii-like console? Microsoft would be doing better business by giving Wiis away than selling 360s.

Spider-man 3 for the Wii

I know lots of words ... but do I know enough words to express the suckitude of Spider-man 3 for the Wii? Let's see.

The best part of the game comes about half-way through. Your Spidey has leveled up a couple of times, so you've bought a fun assortment of power ups. This adds variety and strategy to the beat-em-up missions. You can use your webbing to blind opponents, to lift them up and smash them down, and to swing them into other combatants. Spider-man is Spider-man -- these encounters with random thugs on the street should be more amusing than challenging for him, anyway.

The worst part of the game is everything else. If anything, swinging through the streets of New York City is too realistic. Far too often my Spider-man was swinging into traffic and sides of buildings. Intersections were particularly frustrating, because it was impossible to determine where your web would hit. More likely than not, you would make a turn at an intersection. In the end, I gave up swinging for zipping, which doesn't feel much like Spider-man, but was far faster for getting around.

Sadly, you spend a lot of time getting from place to place in Spider-man 3. Getting around can be fun. In Godfather: Blackhand, stealing a decent car and making high-speed turns was a blast (most of the time). In Spider-man 3, getting around is a chore. First, the game seems to delight in making you cross the city for successive missions. Perhaps hardcore fanboys delight in having realistic locations for the Daily Bugle and Doc Connors' lab, but I was bored stiff crossing the city.

If only for the distraction, I ended up stopping to do crime patrols or perform missions between points in the main story line. This was a mistake. The crime patrols are tedious at best and mind-numbingly bad at worst.

There are a scant few missions on the patrols. You're always rescuing a hostage professor, throwing a bomb into the air, or gathering incriminating evidence against a local gang. It's not uncommon to stop a mugging and have that crime victim tell you that a professor has been kidnapped. You rescue the professor only to find that he looks and sounds the same as the first person you saved. It feels astonishingly cheap.

The worst missions require you to save innocents from a dangerous situation. These missions are far too easy. The lack of difficulty is compounded by the fact that you can't just lift the innocent by-stander over the barrier to safety. Instead, you have to carry each person around the block to safety. This requires more web-zipping, which is particularly annoying in Central Park.

I've saved the worst for last. The final boss battle with Venom is stultifying. First you have to defeat Sandman. Like all the boss battles leading up to the end, it's an exercise in repetition. Get the giant lizard to run into for dynamos. Lure the vampire into the light to weaken him -- over and over again. Dodge ghosts for 40 seconds, put on the black suit and attack, just so you can repeat the process a few more times. With Sandman, you dodge attacks, then run to a spot and hit A. Whoopee! I'm hitting A!

After defeating Sandman you face off with Venom. The Venom battle is notable because all the fun of the multiple attacks and power-ups has been removed.. Web attacks don't work against Venom, so you can't lasso him. You can't use mounted attacks against him, either. So it's weak punch, strong punch until he's defeated. Utterly joyless.

The final fight with Venom really cemented in my memory how sloppy the controls were and how frustrating the camera was. The final battle was difficult because Venom attacks from off camera. Plus, Venom doesn't have to deal with the control scheme that doesn't work very well. Light punch-light punch-light punch-strong punch shouldn't be a hard combination to pull off, but it is.

Finally, the voice acting is good -- but there's not nearly enough variety. I wanted to strangle Topher Grace as Venom because he kept repeating himself through the final battle. It reminded me of turning on the radio in 1992 where Smells Like Teen Spirit was on every station, all the time.

Dumb things written about the Wii

Lots of dumb stuff gets written about the Wii. Here's the latest:

Of the 'big three' consoles, the Nintendo Wii is the only one that seems to have escaped widespread criticism. The PlayStation 3 is constantly being squashed from all sides and the Xbox 360 has endured its fair share of bullying.

...

But however original, and however fun it may be, the Wii is not a perfect console. Here are seven things we'd change about the Nintendo Wii if we had the chance:

1. The graphics

Compared to the PS3, Xbox and any PC less than five years old, the graphics on the Wii are fairly mediocre. Consequently, games can look pretty awful on a large television. True, the Wii has scored with Joe Public thanks to its emphasis on fun rather than graphical prowess. But give it better graphics and it would be a vastly more impressive console.

Actually, the Wii has been criticized for it's relatively low graphics function, poor online play support, and "gimmicky" approach to gaming...for the last year, at least. Why pretend to ignore it?

Yes, the graphics on the Wii do not compete with the 360 or PS3. Not even close. If you look at Spider-Man 3 on the Wii vs. the same game on the PS3 and it's easy to see what you are missing. The PS3 version of New York makes the Wii version look like Super Mario World. I need to see the DS version of Spider-man 3 just to make the Wii version seem more realistic.

That said, think through what Tech.co.uk suggests. More graphics power. Okay, so what's that mean? More money for starters. Bigger box. Bigger fan. More power consumption. More noise. More expensive game development. More expensive games.

All of these requirements are directly contrary to what the Wii is. The Wii is not aimed at hard core gamers with huge high-def TVs. The Wii is not trying to compete with the 360 and the PS3 for those gamers. Instead, the Wii is looking for a corner in every living room. If you've got room for 3 DVD boxes near your TV, you've got room for the Wii.

Better graphics sounds good, but in the real world choices have consequences. Nintendo made a smart choice. They aren't interested in competing in graphics. Instead they are competing for fun. Which is, after all, what playing games is supposed to be about.

Madden 08 Wii information

You can read the entire article here.

Last year's Madden 07 was best done on the Wii last season. Responsive controls, tight, gameplay and great fun were the trademarks of Madden 07 Wii.

This year it gets even better. Miis on the top of the play selection screen.

IGN Wii: How does the game compare visually to last year's Madden, and will the Wii version specifically be getting a visual bump?

Damian: We put a lot of effort into the Visual and overall presentation this year. From our initial showings of the game people are impressed with the leap the game has made over last year. On the visual side we really tried to push the game's depth of color and richness. Everything from 3D grass to the shiny player helmets pop off the screen, even more so when you're playing in 16:9 with 480p. You'll notice this year that player jerseys and pants have that realistic jersey sheen (reflections) on them that actually adjusts with the camera angle. We didn't stop there, though. Our new in-game presentation includes an overhauled Play Call screen which shares some characteristics of the Next Gen game. Overall I think people will be impressed with what they see when they play the game, especially if you own an HDTV.

One of the things that still blow ass about the wii is that no one really has tried to increase graphical quality in games, they just port. It looks like EA put some effort into this one

SSB Countdown Site

I can do without the hype inducing countdown site. The pay off is so anti-climactic.

This game looks like a total rip off of animal crossing, but it might own it because of the 'be mean to' button.

Tecmo Bowl 2008?

I have no clue how they are going to pull this off with no NFL license, but it should be interesting.

Next, Tecmo Bowl...

7:23: Seriously, Tecmo Bowl? People at the press conference cheer. Mr. Inaga, Vice President of Tecmo Inc, takes the stage. Inada takes the stage and jokes that the title of the game wasn't supposed to ahve been revealed until the end. "Just pretend like you don't know that it says Tecmo Bowl here" (pointing to the logo on the screen) "Instead of telling you about it, we're going to s how you a video that is very memorable."

The video begins. The video shows Tecmo employees (including Inada himself) playing SNES Tecmo Bowl. Jumps to a trailer for the full game. Set for release in 2008. But, no footage of the game itself ... just a logo. And no platform announcement, intentionally. "I can't tell you what platform we're making it for. But I can tell you that it's probably not going to be on the platform that you're expecting... if that makes any sense." This 2008 game will not be a port. It's a band new game for one of the new systems. But which one?!? "That's one thing I can tell you for sure. This is going to be a brand new game for one of the new systems ... We're confident that the new Tecmo Bowl is going to be the talk of the town in 2008."
My prediction. Wii game. Waggle controls. Bo Jackson dominates.

NBA live 08 confirmed for the wii

You can read the entire article here.

Publisher Electronic Arts announced that NBA Live 08 will release on Wii this October, marking the series' first appearance on the console.
I hope this is the first of many. 2ksports should come aboard the wii basketball train also.

Boogie: Stompy's Best

We know now that Stompy is going to get a wii for this game.

from Kotaku

Frankly, I was put-off by the current control scheme. It seemed unusually complex for a game clearly targeted at the Wii's more casual audience. Like SSX Blur, I went into Boogie thinking the game would feature a simpler, more intuitive, possibly remote-only method, only to find myself stumbling through my dance routine. EA Montreal may intend for players to more slowly ramp up, to become more accustomed to the coupled waving, twisting and stick control, but jumping into the game with limited play time made me wish for Brick House to end early every time. Granted, the game is still very early and there's more than enough time for fine-tuning, but there's one more aspect to the controls left to consider.

Ya, it took me forever to get used to SSX Blur's controls. I am sure this will be the same way.

EA Playground IGN interview.

I just read the one page interview IGN conducted with Dave McCarthy of EA Canada. It game me a good read what to expect from this new title.

  • Mini Games
  • Wii Remote only controls
  • No online multiplayer
  • A good variety of games from RC racing to Tetherball
EA is one of the Wii's biggest third party supporters, and have done a great job at making intuitively controlled games for the system. SSX blur, Madden 07 and The Godfather: Blackhand Edition have all lived up to my very high standards in Games. Hopefully this title lives up to the previous title's standards of quality.

I am also pleased to see an original title pop up on the Wii. Most of the games found on the system are ports of ps2.

Umbrella Chronicles: Wii developer interview

The guys over at Codename Revolution posted this interview this afternoon.

Executive summary: Wii users are noob.

A few quotes

"The Wii user likes easiness"
"We had to compromise to lower difficulty level"
"UC's original play system was similar to RE4"

I really hope they are still developing the RE4 like UC. Also known as Resident Evil 5, For the Wii.

Visceral

Obviously, the Wii remote is very intuitive when playing tennis, bowling, or even boxing. But there's a visceral element to the Wii, as well. There's something much more dark and satisfying about shaking the remote and nunchuck to finish off a strangulation execution. It's part the mimicry of the action and part the flourish you're allowed -- the expression of the move.

It's like watching a pro play DDR -- it's not just about tapping the directions with your feet, it's about making a whole dance out of it.

So, yeah, the Wii doesn't specialize in Mature games (and it doesn't have to). The graphics aren't as rich and detailed as the PS3 and the 360 but the environment feels so much deeper simply because of the control scheme.

I'm guessing Nintendo knew that.

The Wii online community is gr8!

Wiigg found a new social bookmarking site for the wii. You can read the post here.

The Wii's Internet channel opens the door for an entirely new kind of website, from social networking to streaming media. Instead of finding these sites on your computer, writing down the address, and then going to it on the wii, simply use www.wiifaves.com to manage all your wii-friendly bookmarks. Simply add it while you're on your computer, then check it out next time you're on the Internet channel. If you're looking for something new, search through other users' bookmarks to find quality and relevant wii-friendly web content.

Thats cool, now I want to play Games online.
